  • Brief Update

I’ve decided to take a break from following social media for several weeks (which I realize is probably amusing considering how I barely use it as is). Although I rarely post anything to social media—specifically twitter—it is something that I do use to follow certain authors, editors, and publishers that work mostly in my genre so I have an idea of what is going on “in the industry” as it were.

As you might imagine that isn’t what most people are talking about now, and it is causing me enough distraction that it is getting in the way of my ability to write (putting it in the most mild way possible).

In more positive news, I’m starting to feel the itch to start editing Book 2 now, which is perfect. The first step to that is re-reading the thing and taking notes on what changes need to be made. I must admit I am half excited and half frightened by the prospect of looking at my writing with fresh eyes.

  • Moving Forward

With the end of 2016 I found myself with a few loose ends to tie up, something that I spent all of this month working on until this point. Now that everything is behind me and I have a chance to take stock and catch my breath I find myself at one of those points in life where I can just sit and reflect.

To be perfectly honest this is a very comfortable spot to be. It is easy to fall into the belief that there is nothing making demands of me, even though I know that come February I need to begin reviewing and revising my second book. There is a peace that comes from having everything in order, and being able to consider all my projects with the realization that they are complete (for the moment anyway). Now I can sit, and just enjoy peace as I let my thoughts roam where they will without having to worry about how I am going to write that next paragraph, or scene, or section, or chapter.

But even as I sit here there is this feeling in the very back of my mind, just gnawing at my thoughts. At first it is easy to ignore, but as time goes on it becomes more and more irritating. Before long I’ll even begin to feel guilty that I haven’t started work on something new.

It would be nice if I could tell you that this was something romantic like a life philosophy. “You cannot sit idle for too long because that way leads to stagnation. You just can’t do it.” In reality it isn’t anything so carefully thought out. I can’t even call it a drive. It is more of a compulsion, one earned after sitting idle for years with no change until I was nearly bored to tears.

So even now I can feel it will be time to press on before long. I know where I am now, and while it isn’t terrible I know it isn’t where I want to be. I honestly can’t tell where my current path will bring me. Sometimes that frightens me. Sometimes it leaves me filled with doubt. Still, that is a far better than suffering the discomfort that comes to me when I stay still.

  • Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017

So with the end of the year it is time for all sorts of reflection. I literally just got back from traveling YESTERDAY (and thankfully am not going to be away from home for months on end), so I haven’t had an opportunity to really update this blog in over a week. That means I should probably look at this webpage again and simply make sure everything is up to date, that my links all work, and just do basic maintenance.

In the meantime, how about I look back and see how I did with last year’s resolutions, and come up with new ones for 2017?

  • Honor’s Path (Book 2) Officially Written!

Only a few days late, but just north of 8,000 words longer than I expected. I will not jump immediately into editing, but this should put me on target for publishing it sometime next year (again, I am going to shoot for November or December). Don’t have time for a longer post now, but there should be one the Monday following Christmas. I ought to have a lot to talk about then.

  • Final Stretch

The rough draft for Book 2 of the Honor’s Path series is now 93% written (or there about) and I am now applying myself fully to get it finished. Still on schedule for being done by December 15th, if not a little before that. That is lucky because as thing work out that is right before I go to visit family for Christmas.

Really looking forward to getting this project written. It will free me up to do a few little side things I’ve been eager to attempt. There’s that Novella I want to do as a psudo-NaNoWriMo project, a short story, and of course I want to start looking at laying out the plot for Book 3.

  • Pre-Thanksgiving Update

As I previously mentioned, I will be away for Thanksgiving starting today. Still, I time before we leave so I figured it was a good time to make a blog post keeping everyone up to date about what is going on.

The second book in the Honor’s Path series is now 22 chapters long, and roughly 90% written, with about 3 or 4 chapters to go (I initially guessed 24 chapters long, so I was pretty close!). Also looking like my estimate of 120,000 words was decent, although I’m starting to suspect I am going to be low.

In any case, I will try to continue working on that while I am away, but experience tells me that any progress will be minimal. Still, worth the attempt. It is looking a lot like I will definitely make my December 15th deadline, although that may also slip slightly if the book runs long. Still, it should be accurate to within a day or two at least.

What does that mean? Well, for one it means I will soon be able to throw myself into editing and I am going to set a goal of getting Book 2 out by December of next year. I will also begin writing Book 3 at some point, and probably also try my hand at a shorter novella as well. That probably sounds absurdly ambitions, and it is, but this year has made me believe that it is something I can handle so long as I apply myself (plus this year I won’t be contending with moving!).

Finally: minor tweaks to the blog layout. New archive widget on the right and slight changes to the header. Nobody else probably cares, but this is my blog so I get to brag if I want. :3

  • Holidays ahead

So this Tuesday I get to make the drive down to my aunt’s for Thanksgiving to see my grandmother for the first time since my move (although technically I saw her while the move was in progress). These things always end up being weird for me, because I have this thing where writing when other people are around is completely impossible. Having anyone in the area acts as a distraction I just cannot get over. As such I end up both looking forward to the vacation and dreading it.

Thanksgiving with the aunt tends to be a fairly nice affair though. She has a very nice house located in a pretty area. That side of my family is a bit weird, but in all honesty we get along together surprisingly well. Obviously I hope that the topic of politics doesn’t come up, considering the tense emotions that are running all over with the election results, but to tell the truth that hasn’t ever been a problem with my family. Hopefully it won’t become one this year.

Following Thanksgiving I’ll be finishing up the second book, then at some point will be heading down to visit memere and pepere (my other grandparents) for Christmas. In fact, that trip is largely why I want to finish the second book sooner rather than later. They have a very nice house, but it is an older style without much privacy compared to things that have been build more recently. Writing isn’t something I’ll be able to do while there, but editing is another matter.

Depending on how things are this winter I may need to stay with them to help shovel snow. Both memere and pepere are in poor enough health that they aren’t physically capable of doing such any longer. Obviously I hope that isn’t necessary, but we’ll have to see. A large part of it also depends on my grandparents themselves, and if they want another person hanging around (my mother is already staying with them so they may decide they don’t need any more help).

Anyway, that is what is going on with me through the next few months!

  • Furry Book Month Over!

So to anyone who happened to buy books over Furry Book Month, thank you for your support! Considering that this was our first attempt at something like this, I actually think it went pretty well! At some point I’ll probably briefly discuss some things I think went well in addition to ideas I had for improving Furry Book Month in the future, assuming we do this again sometime.

I mentioned last post that I had bought (and finished reading) the story Legacy. If you want to see what I thought about it, feel free to do so by looking at my Amazon or at Goodreads (they are identical).

In sadder news, despite having planned to take part in NaNoWriMo I will not be doing it this month. I will, however, be doing something like it in the near future once the rough draft to my second book is completed. Think of it as something like a palate cleanser before I dive into editing. My personal “NaNoWriMo” project will probably happen sometime over December/January, depending on when I finish book 2.

Finally, embarrassingly, I need to figure out what I’ll be doing for this month’s newsletter. It ended up sneaking up on me, as it is wont to do. Still, I will work something out for it. Kick it out the door by Monday at the latest.

  • Only One Week Left

So, there is now just 1 week left until Furry Book Month is finished! Time is running out.

Once everything is said and done I’ll probably make a post laying out my thoughts about the process of running Furry Book Month, and how I think it could be improved in the future. For now, though, I am actually quite pleased. I’ve really enjoyed watching twitter to see all the people promoting the event.

I ended up buying 4 books that were being promoted (Legacy, Off Leash, Flower’s Fang, and The Dragon Tax). Also ended up giving a review for Huntress, which I had read before and forgotten to give a review to. One of the books (Legacy by Hugo Jackson) I’ve already finished reading in fact. I’ll be writing a review of it in a day or two after I finish processing my thoughts on it, but might as well share some immediate impressions.

One thing that is always an experience for me when reading is that I always inevitably compare my skill to the person I’m reading, most noticeably when I see them doing things better than I do. This is an embarrassingly common occurrence, but I do my best to take note of what the author is doing when it happens.

In this case, I noticed that Hugo Jackson spent far more time describing his primary protagonist than I tend to do. Generally I try to keep character descriptions on the light side other than a few pertinent details. I like my characters to be identified by how they behave and act, and trust the reader to come up with an image that they like using the key physical descriptors I give.

Hugo Jackson, by contrast, managed to go into a fair amount of dept about what the protagonist was wearing, something I would avoid for fear of interrupting the story flow for something like an info dump. He made it work, however, and I was impressed by how effectively he managed to portray a fairly intricate outfit. It has made me think that perhaps I need to do some exercises where I focus on describing characters without becoming boring.

  • Late Night Updates

I finished all my writing for tonight, but cannot bring myself to go to bed quite yet. What better time to update my blog than when I am so tired my eyes hurt? Should be an interesting experience for everyone, or at least you. I’m probably about to look really silly.

First thing first: Furry Book Month is now half-finished! If you haven’t already, you should check it out while you still can. Following that little link will take you to all the officially arranged promotions, however I have also spotted some deals on Twitter under #FurryBookMonth that I don’t recall seeing anywhere else.

Second, I am writing again. In fact I am making good progress so far. Book 2 the Honor’s Path series is now 2/3rds written. Really regret the long break I took in working on it. Yes, I was moving, but not writing always feels like an excuse. Really felt like I was back in the saddle tonight, so I’m looking forward to knocking out this rough draft by mid-December if possible.

Third, this blog! I am (trying) to give it a bit of a face lift. Nothing major, just a few little widgets. There is actually an archive widget I would like to try out because it looks way nicer than my current one, however now it is a little broken and labels all months after July incorrectly. Hopefully that will be fixed with the new update. So, if you see changes you like (or ones you absolutely hate) be sure to let me know.

That’s all for now. Seeing as it is now 5am I should probably crawl into bed before I become completely incoherent.
